How I Read 100+ Books Per Year
People often ask me how I find the time and focus to read 100+ books per year, so today I wanted to share 8 tips for finding (and making) more time to read.
1: I Don’t Have Kids or a “Normal” Job
This is definitely the main reason I can read so much. I don’t have kids to take care of, and I don’t have a 9-5 that I’m at most of the day. This blog is my job, so I am able to set my own hours and read when I’d like.
But I will say, when I was working full-time while taking a full course load in college, the rest of these tips are how I still read 50+ books per year!
2: I Don’t Watch Much TV
I do rewatch my favorite shows (mostly The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul) during the day while I do chores or get some work done, but other than that I don’t really watch TV or movies much. My evenings are usually spent reading! I do make an exception on Thursdays for new episodes of The Pitt. 😉
3: I Don’t Scroll Social Media
I used to scroll a lot more, but it was truly so bad for my mental health. I scroll a little bit now and then, but the time I used to spend scrolling (like literal hours) now goes to reading — and it’s so much more enjoyable.
4: I’m Always DNFing Books
The last thing I want is to get into a reading slump, so if I’m not enjoying a book, I put it down! By reading what I’m super into, I fly through books because I can’t put them down. I do track my DNFs so I can return to them in the future if I want to, but I rarely do.
5: I Read Short Stories & Graphic Novels
I don’t read these in order to hit a reading goal, but I do end up reading a lot more because I love short stories and graphic novels. They’re also great for getting out of a reading slump if you’re in one! A quick, fun read will give you the boost you need.
6: I Have Fun Tracking
I turn everything into a competition or a game, probably because I’m an Enneagram 7 and Aries moon. 💅
So I have fun creating goals, themed TBRs, and other challenges for myself that inspire me to keep reading.
7: I Don’t Make it Photo-Worthy
I do not create a photo-worthy spot to do my reading in. Some people like that, but I really don’t. I’ll read anywhere and everywhere and don’t pressure myself to get the perfect staging done first. This is why I share mostly graphics on my Bookstagram — I just don’t like taking photos!
8: I Always Have a Book With Me
Whether it’s a physical book, my Kindle, or the Kindle app, I always have a book at the ready. I’ll read in the doctor’s waiting room, when I’m riding in the car, and in my favorite spot — the bath!
I hope these tips help you to hit your reading goals, but remember: Even if you just read 1 book per year, you’re still a reader and are welcome in the book community!
