One of the worst things as a reader is getting into a slump, when nothing you’re picking up is grabbing your attention. I’m here to help you get out of it with these recommendations. I flew through these and they ended my slump really quickly.
The Island by Adrian McKinty
A family’s vacation in the Australian outback takes a terrifying turn, transforming their trip into a run for their lives.
This book had me stressed and I could not put it down. My reading slump was immediately over.
Exercise Bike by Carlton Mellick III
All kinds of trigger warnings on this one. ⚠️ This is for fans of bizarro fiction and extreme horror, but let me tell you: your reading slump will be over!
You’ll be following a woman in a strange dystopian world whose exercise bike is a…human.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
Rosemary joins the crew of the Wayfarer, a ship that tunnels wormholes through space. This is a lighthearted romp with quirky characters and a bit of chaos.
This book just made me so happy. I felt like I was making new friends reading it, and it was an absolute joy to read.
The Martian by Andy Weir
An astronaut gets left behind on Mars and has to figure out how to get back to Earth—and how to survive in the meantime.
I was on the edge of my seat for this one, feeling like I was also trying to make my way home from Mars.
A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L. Peck
A man wakes up in a unique version of hell, where he has to find a very specific book in a seemingly endless library.
This was a big existential crisis that I couldn’t look away from. It’s around 100 pages, making it a quick read.
Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris
A seemingly perfect marriage looks a little different on the inside, behind closed doors.
Lots of trigger warnings on this one. ⚠️
I was horrified by this, but I could not put it down. This ended a reading slump so fast.
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman
This graphic novel is a really sweet story of two high-school boys as they fall in love.
Because it’s a graphic novel, it’s a quick read — and the start of a series you can spend more time with!
It’s sweet and heartwarming, and it got me back into reading mode.
